Director of Music

St. Thomas Episcopal Church, a large and friendly congregation that appreciates music is seeking a
new director of music. The ideal candidate should be an accomplished organist and choir director;
however, a split position with separate choral director and organist will be considered depending upon the
strengths of the candidate(s). Applicants who are well-versed as choral directors, but not organists are
encouraged to apply; likewise, those who are exclusively organists. Candidates will be familiar with the
Episcopal Liturgy and be knowledgeable of traditional Anglican anthems, chant, and occasional renewal
hymns. The candidate will work well with people and in conjunction with the rector, plan music for two
Sunday services, Holy Week and Easter, Easter Vigil, Lessons and Carols (or similar), Christmas Eve,
Feast Days, etc. Weddings and funerals are for extra compensation and the organist has first right of
refusal. The resplendent acoustic of the church building makes it an ideal location for music. The facility
includes a well-equipped choir room, an E.M. Skinner IV/53, a Steinway Grand in the Sanctuary, a Baldwin
Spinet in the choir room, a Schulmerich Carillon, and a 3-octave set of Schulmerich handbells. The Handbell
and Chancel Choirs meet weekly for rehearsal. The Children’s Choir sings for special occasions. There
are two Sunday services, 8:00 a.m. (organ only) and 10:00 a.m. (choir(s) and organ). Instrumentalists are
brought in during the year and at Christmas and Easter. Wednesday evenings provide time for a hymn

Music Associate (Part-Time)

program. Excellent organ skills are needed to assist Director of Music with some services and accompany
anthems. The Associate will direct the youth music program which currently includes a middle school choir
and a high school guitar/vocal group, and the intermediate adult handbell group. Directing the Primary choir,
grades 1-2, is also desirable. This 1300 member church, located on the Davidson College campus close to
Charlotte, NC, enjoys a wide range of music, rooted in the classical tradition, and sponsors an annual organ
recital series. There are two pipe organs, a 3-manual Wicks and a 1-manual Ott. The church uses the new
Presbyterian hymnal, Glory to God. Responsibilities: Assist Director of Music with organ playing, Substitute
when Director of Music is away; Play for occasional funerals and weddings, Accompany Chancel or other
choirs when needed; Play for one Christmas Eve and one Holy Week service; Direct choirs; Direct youth

with many opportunities for the discerning musician. Our choir has performed Handel's Messiah, Vivaldi
and Rutter Glorias, and Requiems of Rutter, Mozart, and Fauré in recent years. We are distinctly Baptist
but follow the Liturgical calendar. Our church music ministry has 3 children's choirs, a youth, adult, and
senior adult choir, 2 children's bell choirs, 2 youth bell choirs, an adult bell choir and a church orchestra.
Additional information: First Baptist Church members value strong congregational singing and solidly
constructed choral anthems. These are the backbone of our worship music. We use piano and organ in
our services (Kawai grand piano) and have volunteer musicians who assist with piano on congregational
hymns. Our adult choir does two weekend retreats each year, one at home and one away. Our youth choir
has an annual summer choir tour. Participation in these opportunities is expected of our church organist
